Swim for Sharks
Swim For Sharks
This is a fundraising event for shark and marine conservation operated as a partnership between Big Blue Diving and Shark Guardian, which is a shark and marine conservation charity. The event runs annually and normally takes place in August. The Swim for Sharks event, initiated in 2008, has generated hundreds of thousands of baht for valuable oceanic causes.
What’s Involved
As the name suggests, the primary focus of this event does involve some swimming! The main event is a 3.4 kilometre competitive swim around Koh NangYuan Island, although there is also a snorkel race for those who don’t want to be too competitive or simply want to join in at a more relaxed pace. The idea is that all competitors raise sponsorship for their swim. All donations go to Shark Guardian to support marine conservation, education, and research.
Many island locals get quite competitive about their Swim for Shark training. First place on the winners’ podium is a coveted position! In the grand scheme of things, it’s all just a bit of fun though. In addition to the swim, numerous other activities are taking place to contribute to the fundraising efforts for worthwhile shark and marine conservation causes:
Other Events
- Kids Swim for Sharks – A mini swim where children can get involved in all the fun and activities too. Usually, the organizers hold this event on the day preceding the adult race. Held conjunction with our local SSI Swim School, headed by professional and experienced UK-trained swimming instructors.
- Auctions and Raffles – From villa stays and dive equipment to free drinks and diving trips, the generous donations of goods and experiences from companies islandwide help boost the fundraising total every year without fail.
- Shave for Sharks – Yes, you read that right! What started off as a bit of a joke over beers has now become a regular Swim for Sharks event in its own right. The head shaving event has also become a solid crowd-pleaser. Certainly, numerous questionable individuals with mohawks have been observed roaming the streets in the days that followed!
Although you may choose not to participate in the swim, it’s worthwhile to join for an evening of fun. Big Blue normally hosts a party extravaganza in their beachfront bar on the night of the adult swim race. If you’re here in August, examine the dates and actively participate!
